The model used for this viola,
which I made in 2003, is an enlargement of a Maggini violin that I
measured and photographed. As the original violin is oversized, I
felt that it would be interesting to enlarge it to viola size. I
picked 15 3/4 inches as a good size for those who don't want too small a
viola yet feel that 16 inches or more is a bit too big. I've
made this model a number of times now, and its been popular with players
with smaller hands.
When I made the viola, I decided
to copy the cloverleaf purfling motif on the back of the original violin.
The sound is dark and warm, and
the C is particularly strong.
